Water Treatment Savings: Bottle vs. Tap

Remember the drinking fountain, that once ever-present free source of water? It seems rather old-fashioned now. Instead, bottled water is everywhere, in offices, stores, homes and restaurants across the country!

Marketing schemes or customer attachment:

We consume over 50 billion containers of bottled water every year, says Business Insider.

And why wouldn’t we? It’s refreshing, calorie-free, convenient, tastier than some tap water, and it’s a heck of a lot healthier than sugary sodas. Sales of bottled water have increased dramatically in the previous years despite the comparable protection and considerably lower cost of tap water.

There is a great deal of debate about whether this is due to deception about tap water, the effects of advertising, or simply consumer fondness based on taste.

Bottled water is marketed as being very “convenient” to people everywhere, but most people already have tap water delivered continually to their homes and workplaces via tap. What makes bottled water so much better than tap?

Bad news on both fronts:

It seems that the facts and research behind both bottled water and tap water reveal some disappointing discoveries. While most bottled water seems to be the best source or “pure, clean water” we find that not only are there deceptive ads and labels but there are also a large fraction of bottled water companies that simply repackage the same municipal water that comes through our pipes!

Then there is the fact that this water – packaged in an oh-so convenient and cute plastic bottle – is more expensive than some gas and can leak unhealthy toxins into the water we bought to drink.

While bottled water is no great option, tap water also has trivial concerns with contaminants such as lead, chlorine and other undesirable impurities that can lead to health problems. Flint, MI in particular has been getting a lot of negative publicity in the last year due to such water troubles.

What we suggest for water treatment savings is that consumers take a sturdy look at consuming tap water that runs through a verified filtration system before being consumed.

The Verdict:

Some people, restaurants and companies are getting behind tap water treatment savings and are grasping the cost of bottled water on their wallet and the world. So while drinking tap water over bottled water is the obvious choice in terms of cost and environmental impact, it has associated stigmas. There’s still an uphill battle against tap water myths and fixed views.
