Why Is It Important To Flush Your Water Heater?
Sand or grit from a well or minerals in the municipal water supply inevitably make it into the water we use every day. This excess material settles at the bottom or your tank and over time builds up which can affect the efficiency and quality of your water.
How Do I Know If I Need To Perform A Water Tank Flush?
Signs you need a water heater flush include odd noises when it is running or if the water flow seems to be restricted.
How Do I Do It?
First, make sure the power supply to the water heater is cut off. Then, wait about 20-30 minutes for your water heater to cool off. Next, turn off the cold water supply to the tank and attach a hose to the drain valve. Place the other end of the hose wherever you want the water to drain. Next, open the valves on either side of the system. Let the water drain completely.
TIP: If there seems to be a lot of sediment remaining in the unit, you can use a vacuum cleaner to remove sediment or close the drain valve and turn on the cold water to loosen up the sediment. Fill partially with cold water and drain again.
How Often Do I Flush My Hot Water Tank?
We suggest that every six months to a maximum of one year, your water heater should be drained depending on how much sediment you collect over time. Try tying this schedule to other items in your home that need maintenance like replacing the batteries in your smoke detector. That way you can tackle a lot of maintenance at once.
