05 Apr How to Survive a Kitchen and Bathroom Remodel
Recently a world famous professional wrestler filed for divorce, and the reason? Their marriage fell apart due to the stress of a house remodeling. Although this might seem drastic, even a kitchen or bathroom remodeling can place undue pressure on even the best of couples.
Remodels take time, energy and money, but often people go into projects without a thorough understanding of what it takes. Just remember, when you’re remodeling your kitchen, you’ll be unable to cook (well, except for your microwave), you might even be without your refrigerator and even, if the pipes are being replaced, the water could be turned off for days at a time.
But it doesn’t have to be that way. You will discover that your remodeling job has suddenly become less stressful for you and your family if you follow a couple of simple steps.
1. Set up a temporary kitchen. Move your refrigerator, microwave and coffee maker into a room that’s easily accessible. Other appliances that will make your life easier are a hot plate, toaster oven and even an outdoor grill. Stock that temporary room with all the basics that you’ll need to prepare simple, healthy meals.
Discuss in advance where you’ll be washing any dishes. If you’re doing a kitchen and bathroom remodel, then prepare in advance for the times when you’re without water.
2. Decide if you’re going to do the work yourself or hire a contractor. If you’re hiring a contractor, make a list of everything that needs to be done. Create your budget, then get a least 4 bids from licensed, bonded contractors. Although on first sight you might think that the cheapest bid is the best, this is not always true. Analyze and compare each bid.
3. If you’ve decided to do the work yourself or to hire a contractor, if you’re planning on having any plumbing or electrical work done, these are two areas where you should hire a professional contractor. By hiring professional plumbers and electricians instead of trying to save money, you might wind up saving money and time and energy. They’re also familiar with the building codes in your local area.
