23 Sep Basic Troubleshooting for Your Garbage Disposal
Garbage disposals can operate for several years, but there comes a time when they become clogged, jammed, begin to leak, or worse, break down for good. Here is a Basic Troubleshooting for Your Garbage Disposal.
1. Garbage Disposal Will Not Start
Most likely, the garbage disposal is not receiving power. Find a reset button located likely on the underside of the garbage disposal and press it. If that does not work, unplug the machine from the outlet to plug in another appliance to test it.
2. Garbage Disposal Appears Jammed
The motor of the garbage disposal works but does not grind. It is a sign that something is blocking it like a bone or a fruit pit. To fix the problem, turn off the disposal by unplugging it from the outlet and clean it. In some cases, you will have to remove the garbage disposal to clear it.
3. Garbage Disposal Grinds Slowly
Run sufficient water down the drain while operating the disposal and ensure you are not grinding material that you should not. If the food is not grinding at all, the blades may have sustained damage.
4. Garbage Disposal Is Not Draining Properly
Try to use a plunger to unclog the drain.
5. Garbage Disposal Leaks
Find out the location of the leak and tighten any loose parts. Replace the disposal’s mounting screws or drain gasket, if required.
Basic Tips to Remember
Use cold water to grind food
Run water after and before use
Do not overfill with food
Do not pour drain cleaners, bleach, or other chemicals
Do not grind bones, coffee beans, glass, metal, fibrous food, and rubber
